Things to do in Huntley, Illinois

The most reliable recurring thing in town, and the one that makes downtown feel like a downtown for five hours a week. It runs along Coral Street rather than in a parking lot, which is the difference between a market and a row of tables.

The bit people miss is that it does not stop in October. There is an indoor market on the second Saturday of each month through the winter: at the American Legion on Coral Street in November and December, then at the Municipal Complex on Main Street from January through April. Smaller, and the only Saturday morning in February with anything on it.

Nine Tuesdays of live music on the square, free, bring a chair. It is the closest thing Huntley has to a standing weeknight habit at civic scale, and it is the answer to "is there anything to do on a Tuesday in July".

The Village names the seven bands for the season and does not say which one plays which night, which is exactly the gap this site sits in. That a concert series exists is easy to find. The fact that decides whether you go on a particular Tuesday is published nowhere.

The big one. Carnival rides, a beer garden, main stage bands, a craft show, a car and tractor show, a pancake breakfast, fireworks. If you go to one thing in Huntley all year, it is this, and it costs nothing to walk in.

Worth knowing who runs it, because people assume it is the Village or the Park District and it is neither. It is put on by the Huntley Fall Fest Committee with business sponsors, civic organisations and hundreds of volunteers. The largest event in town is a volunteer operation, which is the truest single fact about how this place works.

An evening 5K off the square in September. Nine years is the number worth noting: it has outlasted the point where a race is somebody's idea and become a thing the town does.

The town's December night on the square. It is the front of a run of small winter events rather than a standalone: the Ice Sculpture Cocoa Crawl follows downtown on 12 December from noon to 5pm, and Wreaths Across America is at Huntley Cemetery on 19 December at noon.

If you only look at one, look at this one. Thirteen dated entries for 2026, accurate, first-party, and it is where every seasonal thing above comes from. It also does the thing almost no municipal page does, which is keep going past the next month.

What it will not tell you is anything that is not the Village. No bar shows, no church, no school, no library, no Park District. That is a reasonable scope for a village to keep and a bad basis for planning a weekend.

One trap. A Village news page titled "2024 Community Events" is still live and still turns up in search results. It looks authoritative and it is two years old. Check the year on anything you land on from Google.

The Park District holds most of the fields, courts and indoor space in town, so a lot of what happens happens here whether or not it is a Park District program. The calendar leans young and leans structured: youth dances, a senior fair, kickball tournaments, seasonal festivals.

It is the most awkward of the five to read. Several of its own pages return errors, the park directory is images with no text in them, and search results still point at URLs that no longer work. Go in through the events page rather than through Google and you avoid most of that.

The most underrated calendar in Huntley by a distance. On one ordinary Wednesday it carried a craft kit for ages 5 to 12, a teen photo challenge on historic Huntley, a computer class for seniors, a Dungeons and Dragons session for grades 6 and up, a World Cup sticker meet-up and a chess club. All free. That is a fuller day than the other four calendars manage in a fortnight.

It is also the one people most often miss, because the calendar is not on huntleylibrary.org. It lives on a separate host, huntley.libnet.info, and if you go to the library's own site looking for what is on tonight you have to know to follow the link out. Bookmark the calendar, not the library.

Every event is tagged with an age group, a type, a room and whether registration is open. If you are 55 and looking for something at 11am on a Tuesday, this is the only calendar in town that can answer you.

The Chamber is worth watching for a few specific things: the Huntley Community Expo in March, a junior market in August, and the downtown evenings it co-hosts with the Village. It is a business organisation and its calendar reflects that, which is fine as long as you know it.

The problem is that it does not take things down. Something that happened in June sits there in August looking like it is coming up, and after that wastes your evening once you stop trusting the whole page.

The name promises a town calendar and it is not one. It is the site for Enjoy Huntley Week, an annual family campaign with a passport and prizes, run jointly by the Village, the library, the Park District, School District 158, the police department and the fire district. As a campaign site it is fine. As a place to find out what is on this weekend it is two years out of date and will tell you flatly that there is nothing upcoming.

It is still the most useful page on this list for one reason. Its footer names the six institutions that consider themselves this town's event publishers, and if six bodies had to build a separate website in order to tell people about one week of the year, that is the clearest evidence going that the everyday problem was never solved.
